Using asciiprez
Getting started
  1. Add a shape from the Shapes panel, then drag it into position.
  2. Double-click a shape or select it and press F2 to edit its text.
  3. Adjust its appearance and text layout in Properties. Changes apply immediately.
  4. Choose a text format to see the live preview, then copy it or choose an export format.
Selecting, moving and connecting
  • Click a shape to select it. Shift-click to add or remove shapes from the selection.
  • Squeeze layout fits boxes to text and reduces unused space. Review the options and grid bounds before applying. Undo restores the original layout.
  • Drag across empty workspace to select several shapes. Use the alignment controls to line them up.
  • Drag a selected shape to move it, or drag a resize handle to change its size. Guides show alignment opportunities.
  • Drag a shape connection handle to another shape to connect them. You can also add a line from the Shapes panel.
  • Click a line to select it. Drag its body to move it, detaching attached endpoints. Drag either endpoint to attach, reconnect or detach it. Properties control arrows, color, width and dashes.
  • Scroll to pan the workspace. Ctrl-scroll zooms, and Shift-scroll pans horizontally. Hold Space and drag to pan. Fit document brings the drawing into view.
Text layout and keyboard shortcuts
Text properties control wrapping, horizontal and vertical alignment, and text direction. Autofit can resize the shape, shrink overflowing text or keep the shape and text size fixed.
  • F2 edits the selected shape. While editing, Ctrl+Enter finishes and Escape cancels the text changes.
  • With the workspace focused, arrow keys cycle through shapes in spatial order, wrapping at the edges. Ctrl+Arrow moves selected shapes one grid cell.
  • Ctrl+C copies selected shapes and their shared connections. Ctrl+X cuts the selection, with undo support. Ctrl+V pastes a separate, editable copy. You can also paste an asciiprez JSON document or preview detection from pasted ASCII and Unicode diagrams.
  • Ctrl+Z undoes a change. Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes it.
  • Escape clears the selection. Delete asks for confirmation before removing selected objects.
Importing and saving
Import ASCII or Unicode diagrams to detect editable boxes, labels, lines and arrows. PowerPoint import lets you preview and choose slides, then stacks them in one workspace.
PowerPoint options can connect nearby endpoints, separate slides with lines and add slide labels. Prefer compact layout wraps and shrinks box text instead of enlarging the grid to fit full-size text.
Imported formatting and connector routes are approximations. Tables become cell boxes, and pictures become placeholders. Importing into a nonempty workspace asks before replacing it. You can undo an import.
The drawing is saved automatically in this browser. In-browser documents also keeps named documents locally. Save a document file for a portable backup, then open that file to continue editing elsewhere.
Exporting and the text preview
ASCII uses basic characters. Unicode preserves text, and Unicode box drawing adds continuous borders and junctions. Copy to clipboard uses the selected text format and also includes native asciiprez data when the browser supports it. Pasting directly back into asciiprez preserves colors, shape properties and connections. Pasting through a plain-text application keeps only the text diagram. Code comments adds the selected line-comment prefix to the preview, clipboard copies and text exports. Choose the prefix for your language, or enter a custom prefix. Choose None for plain diagrams. View text diagrams in an editor with a monospaced font.
Text-friendly spacing adds rows in text previews and text exports to make short vertical connectors visible. Turn it off to preserve the original grid spacing. This setting also applies to imported diagrams.
ASCII maps common Unicode symbols to single-character equivalents to preserve columns. Horizontal lines and dash variants become -, vertical lines become |, and corners and junctions become +. Arrowheads become <, >, ^ or v. Smart quotes become straight quotes, bullets become *, and an ellipsis becomes one dot. Other unsupported characters become ?. Unicode formats preserve the original characters.
Text exports preserve characters and grid positions, with no colors or font sizes. Text that fits through font shrinking can be clipped in text exports. Enlarge the shape or use a larger import grid if needed.
Export also supports Mermaid Markdown, SVG, PNG, JPEG, PDF and PowerPoint. PowerPoint exports editable shapes and attached connectors. Graphical exports preserve colors.

asciiprez uses Google Analytics to monitor usage and improve the service. Google Analytics may use cookies and collect browsing activity and device information.
You can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. See Google's privacy policy for information about Google's processing and retention of analytics data.
Document storage
Drawing, import and export processing takes place in your browser. The editor does not upload your documents or their contents to Aelyo Softworks or Google Analytics.
Your current drawing and saved in-browser documents are stored locally in your browser until you remove them or clear the site's browser data. Downloaded files remain on your device until you delete them.
Data security
The published site is hosted on Microsoft Azure. No data transmission or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Squeeze layout
Fit boxes to their content and reduce unused gaps across the drawing. Connections remain attached and are rerouted automatically.
      
  
Box widths are chosen automatically from text, wrapping and layout constraints. Truncation removes text and adds an ellipsis. It is off by default. Double arrows become plain lines when their route is at most two cells or too short for their rendered arrowheads. Minimum connector spacing is best effort within nested layouts. Container captions move to the top to leave room for their contents. Existing overlaps and literal text diagrams may limit compaction.

This clears every shape and connection in the current workspace. Saved in-browser documents are kept. You can undo this change.
Replace the current workspace?
Importing clears the current drawing and replaces it with the imported document. Saved in-browser documents are kept. You can undo this change.

Copy text
Automatic copying is unavailable. Select the text and press Ctrl+C, or Command+C on macOS.
Import PowerPoint slides
Text formatting, fonts, gradients, effects and exact connector routes may change. Tables become editable cell boxes. Charts and picture content are not imported. Supported group content is flattened. Pictures become editable placeholder boxes.
